Hi! My name is Sharon. I live in Austin, TX, and I've been a caregiver for 20 plus years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because, when I was younger, I always enjoyed working to take care of people and when my mother became sick, I had to take care of her. And it's very rewarding for me, and I just enjoy working with the elderly clients. I really enjoy that a lot; very fulfilling for me.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to listen to the concerns of the client that you're taking care of. Make sure that you're doing what they would want you to do, and you're doing things that are in the best interest of the client. Do not try to force your way on them. Let them tell you what they're in need of, and that will be your best step for taking care of an elderly client.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Mr. John. I worked for him for two years and he passed away, and he was a big smoker. And he used to sit outside with me and talk to me about all the places he traveled in his life, and his life with his wife. And he was just a great person, and I will never, ever forget him. He was my best friend.
