Hi, my name is Sharon. I live in Torrance, CA and I've been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I've been a caregiver because I love taking care of elderly people and I love children. When I was young, I wanted to be a nurse, and my siblings introduced me to caregiving because they are caregivers too. Right now, I'm taking CNA classes and home health aide, so to further advance myself in caregiving jobs.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient, to kind to anybody, to be respectful and to like what they are doing. I think that caregiving is the most hands-on job that the patients, residents and clients rely on to. Since you're not just working, you're also giving help to others.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I would never forget is Helen. She was a client three years ago. She was very, very nice and very considerate. She likes to talk-- to have a conversation during meals, and she taught me how to cook her dish from the country that she came from, because she's a Serbian. She's a dementia patient, but she even taught me how to organize her medication and she taught me how to cook. And unfortunately, after a year, I stopped working because I had to be full-time in my home care caregiving work.
