Hi, my name is Shavonta. I live in Mesquite, TX and I've been a caregiver going on five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I had to care for a loved one, which was my grandmother and I took care of her going on three years until she passed. So, I kept doing caregiver work, and I actually worked in a home with people with different disabilities, and now I am also a caregiver, and I'm just cutting to being a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, never be impatient with the client because they are going through so much as an elderly. Be there to help make them comfortable in their situation and let them know that everything's going to be all right. You just want to help them as much as you can, make them feel like they're worth something because some people get discouraged. So, you're there to help be their support.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Ada. She was very generally sweet. I always make her day. When I come in, she'll be so happy to see me for me to help take care of her. She was pretty much independent. I also helped her in areas that she lacked, mainly activities and things like that, and I was just so happy that I can make someone else day. It was a time where she would get discouraged and she will be unhappy, but I was happy that I was her support system, to help her through her situation.
