Hi. My name is Shayla. I live in Pasadena, CA and I've been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver, in part, because of my mother, years ago, had surgery and she needed assistance after the surgery, and I enjoyed it. I enjoy helping people, and seeing people happy, and giving people companion care, and I enjoy helping the elderly and assisting them with their daily needs.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be kind, be patient, be flexible, be understanding and helpful, and willing to go above and beyond than expected at times for the client. That would be my advice for a new caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client that will never forget is the name of-- what the family calls her is Mama Lou. Her actual name is Ranette. She suffered from dementia. She was very kind, and she remembered things prior to 2008, and she was a joy to talk to. She was very intuitive when it came to her past and telling stories. And she was very loving, and it was a joy to work with her. She, unfortunately, passed away last year, but she will always hold a special place in my heart and will never be forgotten. And she's just a very warm and caring person that I enjoyed working for, and it was a pleasure to work for her every day.
