Hi, my name is Sheena and I live in Los Angeles, CA. I've been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because knowing that I could care for somebody who is in need and truly confide in me and trusts me and I bring a small prayer of faith and warm their heart, it absolutely makes my day. Knowing that when they see me and they want to interact with me and I became pretty much like a family member to them, there's no other word that could describe how that is. And the fact is I really care for those who are in need, and I wouldn't have it any other way. And I love taking care of others.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be: be patient, be kind, be courteous, be attentive. Always look out for everything around you. Keep an open mind and try to relax and just be you, and they will love you.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is John. He was always so happy and joyful. And when I would take care of him, he always wanted to play cards, and he always wanted to play bingo. And I always would try to interact with him as much as I can. And he would tell jokes, and I would tell jokes. And he would tell me his life story, and I would tell him some of my personal things that have happened to me. He would always try to find a way to help others, and I believe that I helped him do that when I was taking care of him at the time. He would always want to interact with everybody, and he was just very considerate. We had a great relationship to the point where he would come to me and he would just tell me things and I'm like, "Wow, this person, that we were strangers prior to me ever meeting him and now he's confiding in me." That just seriously just made me really happy because my job as a caregiver really show that I have the ability to just have people trust in me. That's one of the reasons why I am a caregiver, and it's just amazing.
