Hello, my name is Shelandra. I live in Katy, TX and I've been a caregiver for about four and a half years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because at the age of 14 my grandma was put into the hospital due to several light strokes. She had undergone about seven strokes, which kept her in and out of the hospital for about a year or year and a half. At the age of 16, I began to take care of my grandmother and I became her primary caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to take your time, be very detailed, and make sure you ask questions. Always understand the family and the needs that need to be met of the particular client with understanding, everything should go very smooth.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is this little old lady I took care of for about four and half years. She had the best spirit in the world and she loves frogs. She reminds me every day what frogs stood for. Fully relying on God. I enjoyed being around this particular client because she had the best spirit and she always was upbeat and happy. When I could come in and make her day a little brighter than it already was. It made me feel accomplished. I cared so much about this particular client because she was always there to give me wisdom where I wasn't sure of certain things. Being around her made me feel like family. She became like a second mom to me.
