Hi, my name is Shelby. I live in Fair Oaks, CA and I've been a caregiver for 2 and a half years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I lost my grandparents at a young age, and my grandma had cancer. And I was helping battle her cancer and everything she needed help with. And then I became a caregiver, and I loved doing it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver will be, try to learn every resident that you have and what they like, because if you don't, they're not going to want to have to you take care of them. You have to be kind and patient with them and support them and listen to what they have to say in order to care for them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget, her name is Judy, I helped her for a year and a half and after I stopped working there, I still visited her. I brought her presents all the time for holidays. I spent a lot of time with her and she always made me laugh. Every time I would help her get into bed or bathe her we would sing together. She was like my grandma. I adore her so much. I've helped her for a long time, and I loved bringing her flowers and gifts and stuff. And she recently just passed away, so it's kind of hard for me because I'll always remember her.
