Hi, my name is Shelby, and I live in Yoakum, TX and I've been a caregiver for seven years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because, in order to get my nursing license, I had to become a CNA first. So I started off by getting my CNA certificate at a nursing home, and I fell in love with taking care of all the patients there, and I continued to work there for four years. And now that I'm furthering my education in nursing, I am continuing to work as an aide and a medical assistant at a hospital.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always be patient, look your patient in the eyes, and treat them with the respect you would want your grandparent or parents to be treated with.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a man I had in the hospital multiple times. He had dementia and he thought everybody was his deceased wife. He would sing a song to every lady that would walk in the room that he had written for his dear wife Ruby, and it was the sweetest song. We would all pretend we were his wife and let him kiss on our hand, and those few moments in heaven he felt like he was with his wife again. And it just awed me to see how much someone could care for another. And we should all treat others like he treated us.
