Hi, my name is Shenee. I live in Hartford, CT and I've been a caregiver for one year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I grew up watching my mom being a CNA, as well as an HHA, and I always wanted to follow in her footsteps, as well as taking care of an ex-boyfriend's grandmother who became very ill after surgery, and it took a little bit longer for her to recover after her surgery. I was helping senior citizens and elderly people with their daily lives because they can no longer take care of themselves and it brings me nothing but joy to put a smile on their face.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be treat every client and patient as you would or you would like somebody to treat your own family member, meaning you should show them love and compassion. When you're feeding them, make sure their food is not too hot and it's just right for them. Make sure every time you take them to the doctor's, you are grooming them. Make sure you treat them with the appropriate courtesy and respect, and make sure they're clean and still have their dignity. Treat them as if they're your own relative and you're taking care of them or somebody else taking care of them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my most recent client. Her name is Jackie. The reason I will never forget her is because she is so strong, so loving, so independent. She is a fighter. The moment that we met each other, there was an instant connection, and she has just been through so much, and yet she has come so far. One of the best memories I can say we've had together is our love for puppies, dogs. She loves dogs so much.
