Hi, my name is Sherika. I reside in Broadview Heights, OH. I've been a caregiver for seven years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because a loved one was diagnosed with breast cancer. After she went into remission with breast cancer, she was diagnosed with leukemia. After she was diagnosed with leukemia, she also was diagnosed with shingles. So, I enjoy helping people and taking care of loved ones. It's my passion.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be be nice and be on time. If there's anything that you don't know or you're unfamiliar with, I will contact my supervisor or the head person in charge. It's also good if you can ask the person that you're caring for if there's something that you need or if there's something that you're missing. Because they can always give you advice themselves or the routine if they have, or the routine that they're used to, to get your day going to the best of your ability. So it's always good to ask a whole bunch of questions. Even if you're familiar but you're just a little bit unsure, ask a bunch of questions. That makes you happy and it makes the client happy.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a man that I was taking care of and I continue to take care of him now. When you first walk into their lovely home, they always greet you with a smile, ask you how your night was. They also make you breakfast every day. The most important thing is that smile when you see when you come into their home. You feel comfortable. You feel welcome. You feel happy. And you always want to be there.
