Hi, my name is Shermaine and I live in Modesto, CA. I've been a caregiver for nine years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver for my grandmother because she had Alzheimer's at the time. I was her primary caregiver. I was there for her as a companion. I help her make and keep appointments with doctors. I provided transportation and I ensured that she was up on time. I assisted her with her personal care and doing food preparations, as well as laundry.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient, be loving and be understanding to your patient. Make sure that you can contribute or you can give them all the attention that they need and just be there for them, I'm sure that they will appreciate that and you will feel good about yourself that you have been patient with them, that you have been loving with them and very understanding with them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A time that I would never forget when being my grandmother's primary caregiver would be when she remember some of the things that we used to do when I used to go and spend summer vacation with her as a teenager. I remembered, I was just amazed that she remembered just a little tiny detail.
