Hi. My name is Shirley. I live in San Rafael, CA. I've been a caregiver over 15 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I started working with a developmental disable back in 2003. After working with them and seeing how it made them feel, it just made me want to go back to school to do even more care and to learn more about caregiving. So that's how I became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be patience and understanding, listening, sitting down, talking with them. If they're upset, find out why they're upset. See what you can do to solve the problem. Again, it would be patience, and understanding, and showing affection, showing them that you care.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
Richard, he was one of my favorite. He would always like to see me. And he said, "Shirley, you are so good to me and I really love how you treat me." And the family was just amazing. He would always be happy when I came. He was loving and precious, and we were very, very close. It really took a lot out of me when he passed away. But I had to learn to get through it, and pray, and always remember that I loved him and he loved me as his caregiver.
