Hi, my name is Shureka. I live in Kilgore, TX and I've been a caregiver for 12 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mother was a caregiver in our neighborhood and I enjoyed going with her to the different people's houses. And when my mom became ill, I was able to take care of her. And that's when I found the passion in becoming a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, remember that you will be old one day. And this could you or someone in your family. Treat everyone with respect and be very kind. You have to have a lot of patience. And no, they don't mean it with their heart if there are diseases that are taking over them. Never take anything seriously as far as if they'd be mean to you. And never feel like you're pressuring them to do anything because you are the patient's eyes and ears at the same time. And you have to make sure that they're going to be okay.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Frances. She was a veteran client in the nursing home. I picked up an extra shift one day. And I decided to take Miss Frances out of the room and get her out. I took her outside the nursing home. And I also took her outside so she could get some sunlight and some fresh air. And while we were outside, I decided to paint her fingernails.
