Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
Hi my name is Silvia, I live in Tracy, California. I've been caregiving unoffically for about 12 years I got into caregiving by just reading on the web how this baby boom generation is starting to age and how they're going to start needing care. In my head, even though I'm only in my mid-40s, someday I'm going to be in that position and I would like to have someone care for me too.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
It was weird because I was taking care of my father-in-law in his apartment complex. I was sitting outside, just taking a breather from him because he can be a little much sometimes. I saw his neighbor going up the stairs, she started chatting to me and saying that she was going to have back surgery. She was really upset and really worried that she wasn't going be able to take care of herself. She didn't know what she was going to do. I said, "I take care of him. I drive him to breakfast and whatnot." And she says, "Could you do that for me for a couple weeks? I'd pay you." I said, "No, no, no, that's okay. I don't mind. I'm here anyway." So that's how it got started. She was going to have surgery and she didn't have anybody to help her and I just happened to tell her I was there, doing that. So she had surgery, I took care of her, she got better, and now she's great. I still visit her every once in a while.
What I admire most about my client is her tenacity, her life. She's frail, but she's still sharp. She wants to hear the game, she wants to go out in her garden. Those are goals that she's set, so if I can be a part of that that's super rewarding to me. It may not be to other people or it might not be such a big deal, but if I can help her have that independent life, that's the goal.
