Hi, my name is Sirena. I live in Vallejo, CA and I've been a caregiver for 2 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my dad was diagnosed with kidney failure, lymphoma cancer, and through my personal experience he is who I cared for.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be is to be very patient, especially when working with people who have Alzheimer's and dementia - they're not always here. So you want to be able to provide them with the support and love that they need.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget would be Lorraine. She is French, and she doesn't really speak English very well. I was working for a care agency and she was the sweetest person that I know. I made her chicken soup for lunch, and I was not hungry at all. This is a memorable moment because she told me, "I don't expect eating soup with her." She will call the care agency and tell them I'm being a very bad girl. And we laughed about it. So I sat down and enjoyed having lunch with her. She's an amazing person.
