Hi, my name is Siu Ki. I'm living in San Leandro, CA and I have 1 and a half to 2 years experience as a caregiver.

How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I love helping people and my first job was being a caregiver. I helped taking care of intellectual disabled adults because they really need help. I enjoy helping them and help them solve problems and help them to build up their social skills and living skills. That's why I enjoy this job. I have the passion to help the others. That's why I love the caregiver job.

What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be having patience, being detail oriented, and giving a sincere attitude because you have to be detail oriented to notice what the clients really need and then help them out. You have to have the patience to listen to every word they say so you know what is wrong with them or if there is anything that happened that made them have difficulties. Some people would not like speak out when they have difficulties, but when you pay attention and have the patience to listen and then you would know and you will provide the proper help. And then, you have to have a sincere attitude to help them with full effort so they get the best help from you.

Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client that I would never forget is the first client that I worked from as a caregiver. Because of the confidentiality, I can only say her name like Miss T. Miss T actually is a sweet person. She is mentally disabled and has an intellectual disability. She was frightening when I first met her and she has many problems because her family does not provide the type of help to let her live more independently. She doesn't know how to take care of herself at all. She has a problem with her social skills. Sometimes she will call her husband for like 30 times a day when her husband is at work. After she gave birth to her baby, I actually went online and searched for some babysitting skills so I can help her with the baby as well. We have a trusting relationship and I would say that is a bond between us. That's why she inspired me to stay in a caregiving job.
