Hi, my name is Sonya. I live in Pasadena, CA. And I have two years of experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my dad was sick with brain cancer and I was afraid knowing that someone else was going to care for my dad and not give him the proper care. So I knew nothing about how to care for my dad but I knew that it was my dad and I needed to do whatever I had to do to give him a great quality of life.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, treat your patient as if they're your own parent. You treat them with respect, with love, with kindness, and most importantly, you have to know that the job is going to require patience.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is my dad, Eddie. My dad was sick with brain cancer. For two years, I took care of him until I moved him into hospice. And during that entire two years, my dad smiled, never complained, and I was able to engage in conversations with him. I was able to tell him, "Daddy, tell me a story about when you were a kid".
