Hi, my name is Sophia. I live in Sacramento CA. I have two years experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver after finding out that my dad had cancer, after finding out he was already in his fourth stage. He didn't have long to live, and he didn't have no one else to take care of him, so I took care of him until he passed, but it always had been my dream to take care of the elderly, because that's what my mother did before she passed. She was a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to learn everything that you can about the resident. Treat them as you would want to be treated. Always have patience. You have to have compassion and love for the resident, as if it was your own family. Do everything possible that you can to make sure that they are cared for, they are not in harms way.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget her name is Gwen. Gwen was a very lively person. She liked to do things on her own, even though she knew she couldn't, but everything that I did for her she always thanked me. She always told me that she loved me. It's like she would wait for me to come on shift, whether it was giving her a bath or feeding her. She always would want to know if I would spend all night with her, or, "Are you working tomorrow?" She just made me feel special, like she was a part of my family, and I will never forget Gwen.
