Hi, my name is Sosepa. I live in East Palo Alto, CA. I've been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I enjoy looking after people and that's what I'm good at. I love looking after elderly people, especially because I guess just being able to be their companion. It kind of works both ways. I learn from them and they let me help them. Yeah, I find that kind of job very loving and something I'm passionate about.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
I think the greatest advice I can offer a new caregiver would probably be to master the quality of patients, especially when you're dealing with the elderly because they're slow and they need time to do things. So being able to help patients as a caregiver goes a long way, especially when you're looking after this group of people. Eventually you start to love them and look at them as your own family members and that's what makes being a caregiver enjoyable. You gain certain qualities that you can apply to your own family members to show how much you love them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A memorable experience as a caregiver, I think of Joyce. Joyce was kind of like my listener. When I was at work, I'd always go and look after her for a few hours a day. Eventually we became very, very good friends. She listens to me. She gave me advice. She's 98 years old and up to this day I have never forgotten some of the advice she has given me. She was my favorite because she knew I loved her and I felt her love for me, so it made my job very easy. Instead of it becoming a job, it was more of just a loving service towards a friend. I think that's one of the memories I enjoy most as a caregiver.
