Hello, my name is Sue. I live in San Antonio, TX and I've been a caregiver for 2 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my best friend had lung cancer, and he didn't want to die in a hospice and asked me to take care of him. So, I went to his home every day for three months and we ran errands, doctor's appointments. I fixed meals and medications for him and saw him took his last breath. He died happy. And then I had another friend that his foot was amputated. He lived in New Orleans, which I drove five hours to take care of him the day he got out of the hospital.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, be compassionate and empathetic to what their needs are. Just help them because they can't help themselves anymore. Just be there for them, and do whatever's needed. Keep a positive mind and attitude with them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my friend Alan. He was my best friend and we talked. And every day, I was just there for him and I loved him. So, I did what I needed for him. That's how I feel towards my friends.
