Hi, my name is Taketha. I live in Los Angeles, CA and I have been a caregiver for more than 15 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
What inspired me to be a caregiver is the fact that my twin brother was born with autism so all of my life I have always had to take care of him and I found a passion for it, for taking care of others so that's my inspiration for being a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to deal with clients as individuals and not as if they are part of a specific group. Clients respect that fact that you deal with them as individuals and to make suggestions instead of giving demands.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Sam. Sam has a knack for dressing and he also takes pride in his appearance. When I first met Sam he was afraid of falling, he had a phobia for falling but through me constantly encouraging him and ensuring him that I would be there as support for him, he has gotten far away from that fear and he takes it upon himself through his own initiative, to walk and he's now to the point where he reminds me of his walking exercises. He looks forward to just taking part in his day-to-day activities of living. He also inspires me because throughout his adversities he has a way of smiling, he can smile through his adversity and facing the challenges that he faces personally, that says a lot about his character and his will to continue to live.
