Hi, my name is Tamara. I live in Fairfield, CA and I've been a caregiver for one year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I wanted to care for a loved one. It was my boyfriend's uncle and he was really sick. I took care of him for as long as I could. It was great. I loved working for him and that's why I'm looking for more work in the caregiving field.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be nice to the client that you're caring for. Do what they ask unless it's really going to hurt them and just don't be rude. I've heard of so many caregivers that have been mean to their clients and their client's crying. And it's just a bad thing to hear because I hate when old people cry. Well, not old people, I hate when elder people cry. It just makes me really sad.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Tony. I took care of him for a year, probably a little bit longer than a year. I first started taking care of him because he was my boyfriend's uncle and he really needed some help. He was really funny. He always called me by my wrong name in the maybe first six months I started working for him. It turns out he ended up having colon cancer and the day I found that out he was depressed, crying, would not leave his bedroom, didn't want me to take care of him, didn't want me near him. It was really heartbreaking. It hurt really bad because I had really started to care for him and it just hurt. I had hoped that everything was going to be okay, but he didn't want to hear anything from me. Well he got it treated and everything is okay now. We still talk sometimes and he has just always been like uncle to me.
