Hi, my name is Tamika, I live in Richardson TX, and I've been a caregiver for over 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver over 10 years ago. I took care of my mother-in-law, and then after that, I justed liked taking care of people and helping them, and I decided to make it a career of mine.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would always for he or she to be considerate, compassionate, patient to the client, to let them know that you're there to help them, and to help them only get through that day, or just to listen to them or help them in any way possible that you can. You have to establish that relationship with your client.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client that I will never forget is Miss Paula. Every morning when I would get there she would always tell me, "Oh, Tamika, I don't have to take a shower today because I took one yesterday." And I knew that wasn't true, because she had Alzheimer's and she really didn't remember from day to day what was going on. And then she would always-- I would say, "Miss Paula, no you didn't take a shower yesterday. This is your day to take one." And then she would look at me and she would say, "You're right, sweetheart. I do need to take a shower." And that was just-- just to hear her call me sweetheart, and to not give me a problem, and be understanding, and know that I'm not giving her a hard time. And she would automatically get up and let me give her a shower.
