My name is Tara, I live in Daly City, I am a Certified Nursing Assistant and I have been a caregiver for 11 years.
What Inspired you to become a caregiver?
I always have had a passion for helping people. I like to help the elderly and sick people. It's something that I love to do. I had this passion ever since I was a little girl. My mom was a nurse, so I used to see what she used to do. That developed an interest in me a long time ago.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
I took care of this lady that was really sweet to me. She would never complain about anything. She would just love to speak, and I liked to listen to her stories, and she would tell me about her achievements in life, and what she had done. And not only that - she would advise me too, of what to do and what not to do. She was more like a friend to me, or sometimes she was so motherly - the way she talked. She used to care about me, and she would ask me about my family and my son all the time. She was very intelligent, and she had a lot of unique things that I have never seen in other people. She was just different.
What advice would you give to a new caregiver?
When you take care of people, make sure you do it with your heart. This is not something that you just do for money, but it's something that you have to love to do. If not, then the job would not really work for you. It's not something that you would be happy doing. Once you're not satisfied with the money, you will leave and go somewhere else. But that is something that I would give caregivers - you have to really love what you do as a job.
