Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
My name is Tara. I live in Brentwood, CA, and I’ve been a caregiver for 20 years. I became a caregiver because it was a challenging job for me.
Who is the first client that comes to your mind?
The first person that comes into my mind is Tana. She was a school teacher, she had multiple sclerosis. She was a very intelligent woman, but she was bedbound because of her illness. With Tana, she taught me a lot too since that was my first one-on-one caregiving work here in the States.
What is your proudest moment as a caregiver?
The moments that make me proud as a caregiver are when the family comes back to me and says “Oh Tara, you’re doing a great job taking care of mom and dad. You know, they appreciate you so much, and so do we.”
What piece of advice would you give to a new caregiver?
If I can give one piece of advice to a new caregiver, it would be: how you present yourself and how you communicate with a patient is the most important thing.
