Hi, my name is Tatiana. I live in Van Nuys, CA and I have been a caregiver for about one year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver when my grandma fell and broke her knee so she needed somebody to help her around the house. I helped her with light housekeeping, some light meal prep, ambulation, sponge baths and that was my very first experience doing any kind of care-giving work and that inspired me to become a caregiver because I am also a full-time nursing student. I love being able to get that one-on-one connection with a client.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, always do what the client wants. Don't just assume that this is the way something should be done because everybody's different, everybody has certain ways of doing little things so just always make sure to talk to the client and get their feedback first.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Walter. He was incontinent and he needed help with transferring and ambulation. He was just always ready to laugh about the situation and just was so okay with his current situation of being incontinent and being immobile that when it was time for me to help him with stuff, he was just always joking about everything and I think that really stuck with me because he was very accepting of where he was at that point in his life and unlike other clients I've had, he was just okay to laugh about it and laugh at himself for being incontinent. I think that just really stuck with me.
