Hi, my name is Tekiyah. I live in Lancaster, CA and I have six years of experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I like working with people and I used to help take care of my neighbor. I lived across the street who was elderly, and to do that I have to obtain a CNA license which I did, and I liked doing it, so I kept doing it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient, and kind, and humble, and to keep in mind that we're all going to need help one day, and that this could be yourself or your loved one, so we definitely want to treat people how we would like to be treated and would like our families to be treated. And also this career is really beneficial not only financially but mentally, and emotionally, and everything else, so much more to it.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Ms. Lena. She was so nice, and kind, and patient, and she was actually one of my first clients but I've known her for years before that. She was a friend of the family and she just got older and lost one of her arms so she needed extra help. She only had one child who lived far away. So, she didn't have anyone to depend on, but she was really feisty woman, really independent. Even with one arm, she did her best and I loved her and I miss her so much.
