Hi my name's Tenee. I live in Campbell, CA and I've been a caregiver for two years now.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver after my great-grandma fell and broke her hip, and I helped her around the house and with her medications and doctor's appointments and stuff like that, so it inspired me. And because caregiving was new to me before that, and I just wanted something different than retail and I was interested in caregiving.
What advice would you give a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to pay a lot of attention to the medications because that's really, really important. Keep a meds log, like they took this medication at this time. Just focus on medications a lot. My other advice would be don't leave them alone, even if they say, "Oh, it's okay." Because it's just better, that's what you're there for, to help them and make sure they don't fall, make sure everything's okay. And also to just be there for them, not only physically, but emotionally as well.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I will never forget is Laura. She has cerebral palsy, and she's so sweet and she's really independent. Even though one of her arms stays by her side, so she can't really use it that much, but she has a cane. And I just like her energy, even though she only has one arm to help her do stuff and eat and stuff around the house. So it's difficult only having one arm to do stuff, but she inspires me with her energy and with her positivity, so I enjoy working with her a lot.
