Hi, my name is Ti'ana. I live in North Highlands, CA and I have been a caregiver for 7 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mom is really ill. She's been having lupus for 20 years now. She's been taking care of me all my life, ill and all. I just felt like it was my duty as a daughter to help her out and, in the process, I've learned how to care for elders.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to learn how to be patient with the client. Sometimes clients just want a companionship - someone to talk to - so, when you're patient with them, it lets them know that they-- no, it helps them become comfortable with you.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A patient I will never forget is Jesse. The reason why I will never forget him is because he was so funny. He had Alzheimer's and dementia, so you would never know what would come out his mouth. The most memorable memory that I have with him is when I took him for a doctor's appointment, and he started questioning the doctor about the qualifications that he has. Asked him did he wash his hands. It was so funny to me because I didn't expect him to say that. But, the reason why I would never forget him is because he taught me how to be patient with my elders, and he helped me become a better person, and to become a better caregiver.
