Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
Hi. My name is Tiara and I like in Oakland, California. And I have been a caregiver for six years. The people who inspire me to become a caregiver are my grandparents. Growing up and seeing them have difficulty with moving and getting around influenced me on wanting to help others and might be in the same predicament and don't have the time to be there for their loved ones 24/7.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I would never forget is Fred. When I came into Fred's life, Fred was in his early 80's. He had been into a lot of different older people homes and with Fred I had to take care of him as if he was my own child. So, dealing with pranks every day was Fred's big way of communicating with me. I fed him every single day, three to four meals a day. I also did housekeeping. I had to take him on every errand that he did that was appointments. Maybe even meeting with friends in the library and with things like that. I also had to make sure that Fred took his medicine because he would like to pull one over you and not-- he also had hard times with bowel movements so I did used to have to make sure that he was able to have a bowel movement and make sure that he was able to do it safely and not be in harm. What I admired most about Fred was his personality. His outgoing of humor, his humor sometimes could be taken as offensive but that was just Fred. And Fred said that he lived his life so he's lived enough to say whatever he wanted to.
