Hi, my name is Tina. I live in Los Angeles, CA and I've been a caregiver for exactly 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have a younger brother that has Cerebral Palsy and I had to take care of him. I also was a caregiver due to my dad got very ill and not too many people were interested in taking care of him properly. That's the reason why I actually became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to any caregiver is please be careful what you do or say to the caregiver. Personal business should be kept only to yourself and not to be shared with others. Also, to make sure that you're monitoring the medications that you're administrating to them due to you don't want them to get sick. Laugh with them, that's the most important thing of all because it helps them have a better spirit and so you can have one also, that makes the day go by faster and everyone is much happier when everyone's happy. That's my advice to a brand new caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is a guy, he's the world's funniest guy ever. He's very high-spirited, he likes to joke around, he's always kind to others and he's always trying to make sure that he has share different stories and experiences with the caregiver. The best part of all, he likes to listen and I love those kind of people. They're always high-spirited and happy, that makes the day go by for both of us and we learn to interact with each other and become even more closer than ever before. That's the response I like.
