Hi, my name is Tyra. I live in Hawthorne, CA and I have been a caregiver for about four years.

How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my elderly grandfather got sick. I was helping him with a matter of things around the house which turned into me ultimately helping him with his medical things, like taking him to the doctor, replacing his catheter. But I've always had a passion of helping people and I've always wanted to go to school for nursing which I am pursuing.

What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be very open, be honest, and be willing to be open for a change and transition. And be helpful, be polite, be very caring, and most of all, just listen to your patient. Listen to things that they like, have casual conversation so you can get a feel of who you are working with, because this person's care is in your hands.

Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a man named Gerald. I cared for him for a very long time. We were very close. We became very close and it just made me feel very warm and happy with myself, because I was able to care for him and we had been able to build a relationship and I was able to get things done for him. And I knew what he liked. As a person, he was always very genuine and open and willing to learn.
