Hi! My name is Valerie.I live in Dallas, TX. And I've been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because when I was in college, I did my final internship in the cardiac rehab, and there was an older population in there. So, I really enjoyed working with them. So since then, I have worked with elderly patients for different things. I've worked in skilled nursing rehab.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be very patient, to be kind, loving. Listening is very important. And to not get into a hurry about things. Think about the individual you're working with and their age, their abilities, disabilities, things like that whenever you're trying to resolve and go through task.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a personal training client that I had. She was 83 years old. She was very fashionable and she was very knowledgeable on things that were going on in pop culture, present times, all those things. We had very enjoyable conversations. We worked a lot on her mobility and balance exercises. And she was overall fun. She shared with me some of her cooking recipes. And that was greatly appreciated.
