Hi, my name is Vanessa. I live in Killeen, TX. I've been a CNA for eight years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I plan on attending nursing school. My grandmother had Alzheimer's and I just love helping people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to take your time. Be patient. This job, if you don't have a heart for caring for people, you need to find another job. You have to have the heart and love to care for other people. Just love them and care for them. It's easy.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I never will forget is Ann. Ann had Alzheimer's and every meal she would keep her head flat on the table and she would never speak. But this certain day I would say, "Ann? Ann, it's time to eat." And then she lifted her head up from the table. She either didn't hear me or I thought. I said, "Ann, are you going to eat?" She looked up at me and real loudly said, "I don't want to eat and I hear you." And to me that was funny. We all broke out laughing. I loved that lady.
