Hi. My name is Vanessa. I live in San Diego, CA and I have 6 years of caregiving experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because, well, at first for me, it was just the fact that I was in need of a job, but when I began working as a caregiver, I truly felt accomplished when I could help somebody else that couldn't do for themselves. I enjoy helping other people and I enjoy making them feel like they can still live even though they're not at their full potential, their full original ability. I enjoy conversation with people who are lonely and have nobody to talk to. I enjoy being able to make somebody's day just by helping or just by having a conversation with them.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be probably patience. I would advise them to be very patient because elderly people aren't as quick and on it as younger people are. I'd advise to really look at our clients as human beings.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Byron. Byron is such a sweet man. He has such a funny sense of humor. He always looks at the brighter side of life. He's a stroke victim so the left of his body doesn't function as well as it used to but he makes the best of it. He doesn't mope. He's not depressed. He just accepts it and takes it for what it is
