Hi, my name is Vanessa. I live in San Jose, CA and I've been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mother needed caregiving my whole child teenage life. And that's what got me started to see how much care another person needs. I wanted to give the same care and love and consideration and respect to other people that needed help.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, don't do this job unless you really care. It's not about the paycheck. It's about caring for someone, showing respect, helping them, and being very, very patient, and loving, and being a good companion and a very, very good listener, and show respect.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I would never forget is, I was with him for 3 years and 10 months before he passed away. It took a lot of patience because he was in a wheelchair. He was was a man's man in the military so it was very hard for him to have somebody else take care of him. But he was also very loving and very caring. And even though it was hard at times, he made the job very memorable and fun.
