Hi, my name is Vanessa. I live in Santa Maria, CA and I've been a certified nursing assistant for 13 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a certified nursing assistant after I had to care for my grandmother and sister and this family member got injured and I had to heal her wounds. They were pretty deep in her head. And the birth of my child, yeah. And that's why I became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be look with care and precaution, put alarms on when a patient doesn't look great. Always ask them the question to see the level of their orientation, look at their skin, look for any new bruising, skin tears. Make sure that they're urinating regularly pretty much watch over them very closely when possible because they are very fragile people, the elderly are.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
Client I will never forget is Mary, she was wonderful. She actually passed away because she broke her hip. Again, she probably should have had an alarm of some kind, so that we knew where she was standing. But she was very memorable because regardless of her dementia, she was very motherly. She would make sure that everyone had eaten. She would watch over everybody, she was always with us, guiding us. She was very motherly
