Hi, my name is Vanessamarie. I live in Long Beach, CA and I've been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my great grandmother was a caregiver for many many years and I wanted to follow in her footsteps. I started out in caregiving working my way up to become a registered nurse one day. And during the line of work that I do and I treat my clients as I would like one of my family members to be treated.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, one, to have patience. Patience is key when taking care of individuals. And two, treat the client the way you would want to be treated or the way that you would want a family member to be treated.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Sharon. Sharon was a resident on an assisted-living facility that I worked at. She was always in a good mood, generally nice to everybody. She would always help out others in any way that she can. I will never forget Sharon because she would stay up with me every night until my shift ended and greet me every day that I came into work. Sharon had a disability so she couldn't do things with her left side of her body. So I would trim her hair and style her hair every week and she was just a good person to be around and helped my shifts go by quick.
