Hi, my name is Vennesa. I live in Olivehurst, CA and I have 10 years experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I started out as a housekeeper in a senior assisted facility living. And as I'd grown longer on the job of being a housekeeper, I learned that I had the skills, and techniques, and ability to learn and work with senior citizens, so I began giving care. And that's where I started my caregiving career and have enjoyed it, ever since then.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient. Seniors do begin to forget things, and there's other emotions going on, especially if they are in a care home, missing their family, siblings. So I would say, be patient and empathize with them, treat them as you would want somebody to treat your own family. They're people just like us. It doesn't matter the age.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a gentleman, I gave him my own nickname for him, which ended up being Wild Bill. I called him Wild Bill. His name was Bill. He was the sweetest old man. His wife was in there with him, as well. They were the sweetest couple, ever. However, I did work the night shift. And he would come out and keep me company every night, and want to assist folding laundry with me, even though he was paralyzed on the left side of his body and only folded with one hand. I mean, it was the cutest thing you could ever see. He was the sweetest old man. He still is around to this day. I do not work with him, but I do visit him so often.
