Can you tell us a little about yourself and your experience as a caregiver?
Hi, my name is Verna. I live in South San Francisco, and I've been a caregiver for almost 8 years now.
What certifications or licenses do you have?
I originally was a CNA in my caregiving career and also studied as an LVN in the hospital setting. From there I learned a lot and cared for people with many different types of illnesses. Although, my preference is to work in the in-home setting so that I can work one-on-one with the client.
What tips do you have for caring for someone with dementia?
I have some clients I'm taking care of who have dementia and Alzheimer's. When approaching someone with dementia, you have to first always ask the client how they want things done, and then most importantly listen to the client. You have to be compassionate and show empathy with them.
