Hi, my name is Vickie. I live in Carson, CA and I've been a caregiver for ten plus years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I've been a caregiver, and the reason why I chose to be a caregiver for as many years as I've had - I had a sick grandmother who I attended to, and I felt that that was my passion, and I love doing caregiving.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to do the best you can when you're taking care of a patient. Listen, because that picks up a lot when you're taking care of a patient. Have an open attitude, have an open heart. Do the best you can when taking care of a patient.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget was a lady who was just diagnosed with breast cancer - young lady around 30-32. Had just had a baby, and was very depressed when she came on our unit. Her demeanor was very low. What I did, since she was my patient and I was assigned to her - I talked to her, I prayed with her, I listened to her. She cried telling me about her story, and I told her that everything was going to be okay, don't worry about it, keep the faith and finally, she went to sleep and she woke up in better spirits than she was when she arrived on our unit.
