Hi, my name is Vikki. I live in Long Beach, CA and I have over 10 years of caregiving experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I enjoy helping others. I've always enjoyed helping others from babysitting as a young girl or as a teenager playing guitar in senior chair homes. Just helping others just brings me joy whether it be establishing a relationship of trust with an individual's family member that may have become overwhelmed with caregiving for their loved one and helping them find relief from their caregiving duties for their loved one.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to treat their base client, for a lack of a better board, with kindness and respect and to not be judgemental, to keep their client safe so that the client feels safe. And to just show lots of kindness and respect and to work on building a relationship of trust.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Joan. I will never forget Joan because of the smile that would just light up on her face when we would be out in public and people would see us together as I would be assisting her. And they would ask if I was her daughter or I'm going to say she was my mom. And she would just kind of hold on to my arm, give it an extra little squeeze and just beam because she hadn't been out in public for a while. It was just nice to bring her a higher quality of life and you would see her laugh and she really enjoyed other people's responses.
