Hi, my name is Santa Viviana. I live in Ontario, CA and I've been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I'm studying to enter the medical field. I love experiencing being able to help people, taking an EMT course, and helping people when I did my internship at the hospital. Their expressions made me feel better, and it's something I want to continue doing. And caregiving has given me an opportunity to start somewhere where I feel like I can help people, and it also helped me as I enter the medical field.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, enjoy the experiences you get with each patient. Everyone's different, and you'll get different stories and different characteristics from patients. And those are the best moments because when you look back, it makes you feel like you're doing the right thing - you being able to help them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I would never forget is a resident we had when I worked at a senior home. I worked in the memory care department, and he suffered Alzheimer's, but he was just always happy, even though he couldn't remember certain things or family, he never lost the attitude, the positive attitude, the dancing, the making you want to laugh, and not letting anyone else's attitude get in his way and making him sad or mad. And Roger was just amazing because every morning I was there, he was up early in the morning, and it's something I looked forward to going to work, seeing him and being able to help him because he was just this positive attitude, even though after everything he's going through.
