Hello, my name is Windy. I live in Dallas, TX. I've been a caregiver for 13 years or more.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mother, she enjoys taking care of people, and I wanted that same enjoyment that she has. And as I grow to take care of the elderly and people that is unable, not just the elderly, I grow to understand them and their sickness and how I can be a blessing towards their life. Not just their life but their family lives as well.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be honest, patient, understanding, and help them to realize that you're there to take care of them. But most of all, treat them the way you want to be treated.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I'll never forget, the first time I met this man, he was paralyzed from his neck down. And the only thing he could do was just look at me with his eyes, and it looked like his eyes were talking to me. I'll never forget his eyes. And then when I did start to work with him, he asked me, "Do you think I will be able to walk again?" and I told him, "Yeah." I said, "As long as you have God in front of you, and your mind is set on doing what you want to do, yes, you will walk." And then as I worked with him, the couple of days that I did work with him, I showed him how to get into bed and he started getting better. And then after a while, I didn't see him anymore.
