Hi! My name Yareli, and I live in Kerville, Texas, and I have been a caregiver for two and a half years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandma has a friend, or she had a friend that needed someone to care for her and to help her with groceries and stuff. And so my grandma asked me if I would like to help her out, and I said, "Why not?" And I worked with that lady for, I would say, for six or seven months, and then from there, I went to work with another person. He was a guy, and I worked for that guy for about two or three months.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to always care for your patients. Maybe you may not be interested in the job that you're doing, but no matter what, you should care for your patients because one they need the help, they need the love and the help that they can get.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Martin. I remember one time I had gone to his house, and he had asked me if I had ate because he was hungry. And I had told him, "No, I haven't ate," and he told me, "Oh, would you mind going to Larry's Taco" to go get us some tacos. And I told him, "I wouldn't mind," and he told me that, "He would get tacos," or that, "If I would go get tacos, that I could buy one for myself as well." And he was just so nice. And he felt like a grandpa to me and only-- and even if I had only known him for three months, he was just so nice to me and really had a great smile on his face. And I think that was heartwarming for me because such a sweet person. He just wanted some tacos, that's all he could think of. And I remember that he just loved their tacos. He really, really loved those tacos. And I hope he's doing great.
