Can you tell me a little about yourself and what you like about being a caregiver?
My name is Yeshi. I live in San Jose and I have been a caregiver for five years. I like being a caregiver because it makes me feel satisfied that I'm doing something worthwhile in this world.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
One of the clients I'm still working with is a lady who is 100 years old. She's very kind but she is in an early stage of dementia, so there are times that she gets really confused. I speak with her very kindly. I discuss it with her and I don't get impatient with her when she repeats it. She trusts me now, so she listens to me.
What are the most important qualities for a caregiver to have?
A good quality of a caregiver is someone who loves people, who is compassionate, and who learns through the process. This job has really given me the bounty of knowing how human beings are very important; not wealth, not education-- but compassion, love and trust.
What is your proudest moment as a caregiver?
People tell me that I'm a good caregiver. One of my clients told me, "I want to be a caregiver if I ever have to come back and live again." So I said, "Why do you want to be a caregiver?" She said, "Because I want to be like you." I was so touched by that. When my client passed away, they invited us to her memorial and this conversation was one of the things the daughter mentioned. This is what makes me feel like I'm doing something worthwhile with my life here.
