Hello, my name is Yolanda Martinez, I live in McAllen, TX, and I have been a caregiver for more than 12 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver since I was very young because I have a brother and a sister that are disabled and in special need of care. And so they are my loved ones, and I love people, and I love caring for people. I love providing for people that need special needs, so that's why I became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient with the client, with the person they are taking care of. Be compassionate, caring, loving, and understandable, and meet their need, as they need you to provide them because that's what a caregiver is supposed to do, is care and be compassionate with the person they're providing for on a daily basis.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
One of my clients that I will never forget, her name was Perla, very nice, sweet, caring, older lady, and she was disabled, on a wheelchair. And she loved to eat sweets, she loved to talk. She was disabled, she couldn't walk, but she could talk, laugh, and say jokes. And I just loved seeing her everytime I would see her because she would brighten my day because she always had a beautiful smile on her. I always was very happy, even though she was disabled and on a wheelchair, and unfortunate that she couldn't walk, she was always in a happy mood and always with a very big smile.
