Hi, my name is Yvonne and I live in San Jose, CA. I've been a caregiver for six years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I wanted to care for the elderly, since they can't help themselves like they used to. So I made that choice, and I was happy to just help them and make sure to let them know that they're not by themselves and they have help and that I'm here for them. So that's why I became a caregiver - to just help the elderly.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be that it is hard sometimes to work with the elderly, especially with dementia patients, but you just have to have patience and care and have that caring for them. And it's a lot of patience and caring for another resident, dementia patient or not. It's just like I said. You have to have a lot of patience and I love working with the elderly. I would recommend it if it's for you. If it's not for you, then just don't do it.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget will be Marie. She was a very kind, very straightforward lady, and she was really just someone to talk to, and she shared her moments in life, and I loved that. They share their past and they talk about how they used to be, what they did and everything. So she'll always stay in my mind.
