Hi! My name is Zakeya. I live in Sacramento. And I have three years of caregiving experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because when I was nine years old my grandpa was diagnosed with cancer. And it was going very fast, he was on hospice care, and the nurses would come to the house and take care of him, and make sure he was okay. By seeing that, it inspired me to also want to help people, that's why I am a CNA now. I've been doing it for three years and I really enjoy it and I really enjoy helping people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to treat the patients as if they were your family member. Because at the end of the day, that is somebody else's family member. And you want to treat them nice, to care for them properly, and you want to make sure that you keep up with their every day life. Because they're somebody else's family member, make sure you care for them like they were your family.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I will never forget is Miss Shirley. She is not the most nicest person, but we had that connection because I know how to talk with her. I know how to get her to open up. And I think we relate because I just take care of her every day. And it's funny, because she likes to be alone, but if she sees me taking care of somebody else, she really wants me all to herself. And I think that goes to show how good of a caregiver I was to her. Like I said, she's not the most easy patient. but I changed up with her and that's convenient for her to make her feel good
