Hi, my name is Zeynaba. I live in San Diego, CA and I've been a caregiver for about a year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I used to take care of my grandmother because she had a mental disorder. She passed away recently and it was because taking care of her for such a long period of time kind of inspired me that there's somebody out there that needs help and if I can provide that help, I'm willing to do it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, be positive. Be relaxed. Be comfortable. Just think of working with this person as a member of your family and by thinking that they're a member of your family, you will just feel like you're just helping a relative out, instead of feeling like you're working with a stranger.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget would be Ellen, she had a mental disorder and even though she had a mental disorder, she had relatives that lived in the same city as her but nobody ever came to visit. But it was through her positive energy and her happiness that she never really seemed to show any sadness and she was just a happy individual and it was because of her happiness that she really did lift up the room and she was really funny. She used to tell us funny little jokes and stuff and it was because of her that I enjoyed working and I loved waking up in the morning and seeing her laugh and stuff and it just made me really enjoy my work.
